Ten minutes after the weather alarm on my phone went off, eight minutes after Javier called, and six minutes after Johan called, my brothers were pounding on the motel door. I was surprised it had taken them this long to figure out that I was back in town. I set aside the gun I was cleaning, the one that shot silver bullets for shapeshifters who had gone rabid, and opened the door.

Grayson thrust his phone in my face as he walked in, glaring at me. “Explain.”

Fenton at least gave me a brief hug before he stepped in and sat on the chair at the desk. He leaned away when he noticed the weapons laid out on the desk.

I closed the door and leaned my back against it. “Good morning. It’s nice to see you, too.”

“Doing some hunting, bro?” Fenton fondled a bottle of holy water before setting it down next to a row of industrial-size salt containers.

“Just organizing,” I said carefully. Technically, I wasn’t hunting. I was being hunted.

Grayson scoffed. “Yeah, okay. You’re not hunting, but you’re cleaning a gun?”

I shrugged. “Gun ownership is a serious responsibility. I need to keep everything in top shape.”

He leaned over and grabbed a box of wooden bullets off the edge of the desk. “Sure that’s the reason. What are you doing back here?” Grayson took a step closer, then another. My shoulders tightened and I tilted my chin up, using my extra two inches of height as a warning.

I crossed my arms. “I was on a mission that led me back here. Maybe I want to stick around this time. Maybe I like seeing my brothers.”

“Maybe it’s for a girl.”

Fenton stood up and grabbed Grayson’s shoulder. “Guys!” He looked at me with his bright blue eyes. “Lucy, I’m glad you’re here. Grace, sit down.”

Grayson grunted but allowed Fenton to lead him to the edge of my bed, where they both sat side by side. My middle brother kept his eyes locked on me. “Why do we have a severe weather warning for a storm that literally appeared minutes ago? What’s going on?”

Fenton leaned forward, his hands on his knees. “Snow is expected this time of year. Mackinac Island just ended its tourist season. Ferries are done for the winter.”

Grayson shook his head. “Yeah, for winter. Not for a fucking snow-pocalypse. Now, I know you’re both new to this town—”

“And you’ve been here your whole life, right?” I rolled my eyes.

“But eighty inches of projected snow in a twenty-four hour period during the first week of November is not normal. Now what the fuck is going on? What are you really doing here?” Grayson tried to stand, but Fenton shot his arm out, making Grayson fall back down. “What shit did you get caught up in with hunting that you brought down on our family?”

“Why do you always blame me?” I ran my hand over my scalp, frustrated. “This was all Dad!” Technically, I was cleaning up Mom’s mess, but they never needed to know that.
